Healthcare, especially research, is notorious for its many acronyms and complex terms, something our involvement colleague Julie Bryant encountered as Patient & Public Lead in a local NHS Trust. “When I entered academia as a public contributor, I found it a new and different world with lots of terms, acronyms and language that I did not understand.”

As part of her remit to deliver education and training, Julie, along with her Involvement Team Colleagues, decided to produce a ‘Jargon-Buster’ primarily for patients and the public – it has, however, gone on to be useful for students and newly appointed research staff working across different themes and studies.

Primarily produced to explain acronyms and terms used in the NIHR Mental Health MedTech Co-operative and the Nottingham Biomedical Research Centre Mental Health Technology Theme, the guide will have universal benefit to anyone new to the world of clinical research.
